Christine "Xine" Yao, Ph.D. '17, was invited to contribute to the BBC Rethink Project, which asked leading thinkers from across the globe how the coronavirus crisis can make us rethink the world. In her program, Yao explains how masks are an expression of commitment to the collective good.

In her programme Xine talks about masks in relation to anti-Asian and anti-Black racism and how we should not only value expression but also the importance of concealment.
"COVID-19 has highlighted the need for transparency. However, we need to also make space for the need for seemingly antisocial gestures of withholding — even from the expectations of sympathy."
