The Cornell English Department retains the pluralistic ideals of the university’s founders and continues to respond to and embody a constantly evolving discipline. Within the department, research has developed new understandings of the discipline, as well as a range of textual productivity, from producing critical editions to writing poetry. Outside the department, the growth of interdisciplinary work has led to a range of connections across the humanities at Cornell. Along with teaching more than a third of the Freshman Writing Seminars offered by Cornell’s Knight Institute of Writing in the Disciplines, the English Department’s nourishing of this wide range of scholarly and creative writing has maintained the department’s central importance in the humanities at Cornell and world-wide.
There are many ways in which your gift will support the continued success of the English Department. These are but a few:
- An $11 gift provides lunch for an undergrad at the next Books Sandwiched In event.
- A $20 gift funds one Interfolio membership (necessary for PhD student job-market candidates).
- A $50 gift creates a book scholarship for an undergraduate student.
- A $50 gift furnishes a meal for an MFA student and a visiting writer.
- A $250 gift subsidizes a travel grant for summer research for a student (both undergrads and grads need these experiences!)
