Historians debate authorship of letter attributed to Major Sullivan Ballou

Shirley Samuels teaches literature, history, and visual culture at Cornell University in the departments of Literatures in English, American Studies, History of Art and Visual Studies, and Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Samuels is working on a monograph, currently titled "Democratic Witness," on witnessing, testimony, and culture in the United States. Most recently, Samuels edited Race and Vision in the Nineteenth-Century U.S. (2019).
