Assistant professor of English Ishion Hutchinson is one of Cornell’s newest recipients of a Guggenheim Fellowship.
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation announced the 2017 winners on April 7. From nearly 3,000 applicants to this year's 93rd annual compention, 173 scholars, artists and scientists was chosen for their "prior achievement and exceptional promise". Hutchinson joined the Cornell faculty in 2012 and is the Meringoff Sesquicentennial Faculty Fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences. He is a poet and essayist with two published collections: House of Lords and Commons, which won the 2016 National Book Critics Circle Award for poetry; and Far District: Poems, published in 2010, which won the PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award. This latest accolade joins prior praise for Hutchinson's work, which includes a Whiting Writers' Award, the Larry Levis Prize from the Academy of American Poets, and the Glenna Lushei Award from the Prairie Schooner Journal.
A native of Port Antonio, Jamaica, he has a bachelor’s degree from the University of the West Indies, an MFA from New York University and a doctorate from the University of Utah.
