Overview
Emily A. Foster is a Lecturer in the Department of Literatures in English. She holds a Ph.D., as well as an M.A. and an M.Phil., in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University; an M.A. in Education from Stanford University; and a B.A., summa cum laude, from Cornell University.
Her teaching and scholarly interests include the global 19th century novel, Victorian literature and culture, intersections between the Victorian and Early Modern periods, literature and television through the lens of the serialized narrative, science fiction literature, and genre studies.
Her most recent research project, Unhappy Endings: Continuing the Nineteenth-Century Novel, explores Victorian and 19th century novels that come to a halt in a way that invites subsequent continuation—in the form of sequels, serialized installments, and completions or attempted completions of unfinished works. Her work has appeared in Dickens Studies Annual, The L.A. Review of Books, Public Books, and Politics/Letters.
Before coming to Cornell, she was Guest Faculty at Sarah Lawrence College, a Graduate Teaching Fellow at Columbia University, and a John C. Kluge Fellow in the Columbia University Scholars’ Program.
